Exhibitions

Since its beginning in 1996, San Francisco Center for the Book has mounted over 100 book arts related exhibitions. Annually, SFCB produces 3-4 exhibitions in their gallery space.

SFCB's long standing practice of exhibiting artist book creators and current topics within the art book community has provided gallery goers with insight into the world of contemporary and historical artists books. Exhibition related programs and events encourage community dialogue, education, and social opportunity.

The Gallery

SFCB’s exhibition space is adjacent to the print studio and retail store, with an open floor plan which creates the perfect environment for viewing artists' bookworks and prints. Prints. The exhibition space is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Admission is free.

SFCB is closed on the following holidays: New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

Exhibition Catalogs

SFCB produces full color catalogs for each exhibition produced. Catalogs are fully illustrated and often feature additional essays, interviews, bibliographies, or artist information. Exhibition catalogs are available for purchase both online and in person at SFCB’s Biblioshop.

Exhibition Proposals

Curators and individuals interested in proposing an exhibition at SFCB must fill out the Exhibition Proposal Form. Proposals are reviewed by SFCB's Exhibition Committee approximately twice a year. SFCB’s exhibition program seeks to provide opportunities to emerging and mid-career curators; individuals from diverse backgrounds working in the fields/mediums of artists' books, print- making, letterpress, papermaking, and related arts are strongly encouraged to submit proposals. Proposals for group exhibitions will be given priority.
